So, yes, the time has come, like the Walrus said. It's become oh-so-fashionable to have one of these and you know I'm *all* about peer pressure.

The fanfiction is still public and will always be (unless I get a cease-and-desist letter), as are some of the memes and the 'snippets'. Everything else (not that there is much of it) is neatly tucked away. If you think you have a reason to see it, drop me a comment, don't be shy!
(I think I might have been too subtle before)
Also, no re-posting anything in this journal to Facebook or Twitter, please.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012 With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists. The only way is to hit them where it hurts. Their profit margins. March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide. Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine. Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent: "We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."
Original image and campaign source: reddit.

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

And for those who favor the more targeted boycott, you can find info  here.  But no matter which,  you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation.  We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

... stolen from [livejournal.com profile] arancione because I haven't used LJ for ages and I need something to distract my mind from the endless loop of 'Sherlock, Sherlock, Moffat, oh poor John!' that's going on around it.

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

Because I swore I couldn't do it, here's my attempt to choose just ten The Decemberists songs. My favourites. The ones that never fail to make me cry or, at least, leave my heart in my throat.

There are many, many more. In fact, it'd be easier to make a list of the songs I don't like from them (less than five? In the whole of their seven albums? Thereabouts). I didn't even get to include any of the songs from their last album... 'Rise to me' should've made the list, but I couldn't find it a place...

Anyway, here are My Ten Favourite The Decemberists Songs. All of them are worth the listen, and don't let the lyrics pass you by, they're the best part of most songs...

Red Right Ankle

Sample lyrics: This is the story of the boys who loved you, loved you now and loved you then. Some were sweet and some were cold and snubbed you, some just laid around in bed... some of them crumbled you straigh to your knees, did it cruelly, did it tenderly... some of them crawled their way into your heart to rend the ventricles apart...

I know that most people who follow this journal are, to some extent, into football slash, so it is with great pleasure that I bring a book rec that will undoubtedly resonate with all of you.

The blurb says that 'Ravages' is a love story between two footballers -Steve Gavan and Daniël Borghart, who play for a fictional club in the Premier-, but it's so, so much more than that. It's a story about loss, about acceptance, about secrets and what happens when those secrets come to light.

It's not the typical boy-meets-boy, boys-fall-instantly-in-love, boys-face-contrived-circumstances-that-keep-them-apart, boys-have-a-happy-ending story. Seriously, take your expectations and leave them at the door when you start this book, because this is a story that goes much deeper than that. I dare you not to fall in love with the characters -the main couple, their teammates and friends-. I dare you not to feel their struggles as your own. I dare you not to read this book and then look at the fanfiction we all read and write and see it differently.

I really, really, really don't have enough words to praise this story.

You can read more about 'Ravages' here, enter a giveaway for one copy at the author's blog here or buy a copy straight from the publishing house here.

I promise you won't regret it... I know I didn't!

Heartened by the response to my Rocknrolla/Richard Siken mash-up, I've decided to do what I originally wanted to do with the film stills... A Softer World remixes!

I've been obsessed with Robert Siken's "Wishbone" for a while now, and I just re-watched Guy Ritchie's "Rocknrolla", and realisation struck me that those two things were PERFECT for each other.

So, with the help of [livejournal.com profile] capathon's incredible HQ stills of the movie, posted at [livejournal.com profile] paperlate, my admittedly limited Photoshop skills, and inspiration from this amazing Inception fanart, I made... this.

I played fast and loose with movie chronology, with the poem's original spacing and punctuation, and took artistic liberties right and left, but I hope you like... comments, constructive criticism and squee are all welcome!

I want you. )
dfotw: (Default)

You saved my life, he says, I owe you everything.

You don’t, I say, you don’t owe me squat, let’s just get going, let’s just get gone, but he’s relentless,

keeps saying, I owe you, says, Your shoes are filling with your own damn blood,

you must want something, just tell me, and it’s yours
.

But I can’t look at him, can hardly speak,

I took the bullet for all the wrong reasons, I’d just as soon kill you myself, I say.

You keep saying, I owe you, I owe… but you say the same thing every time.

Let’s not talk about it, let’s just not talk.

Not because I don’t believe it, not because I want it any different, but I’m always saving

and you’re always owing and I’m tired of asking to settle the debt.

Don’t bother.

You never mean it anyway, not really, and it only makes me that much more ashamed.

There’s only one thing I want, don’t make me say it, just get me bandages, I’m bleeding,

I’m not just making conversation.

There’s smashed glass glittering everywhere like stars. It’s a Western, Henry,

it’s a downright shoot-em-up. We’ve made a graveyard out of the bone white afternoon.

It’s another wrong-man-dies scenario

and we keep doing it, Henry, keep saying, until we get it right…

but we always win and we never quit, see, we’ve won again, here we are at the place where I get to beg for it

where I get to say, Please, for just one night, will you lay down next to me, we can leave our clothes on, we can stay all buttoned up?

or will I say

Roll over and let me fuck you till you puke, Henry, you owe me this much, you can indulge me this at least, can’t you?,

but we both know how it goes. I say, I want you inside me and you hold my head underwater,

I say, I want you inside me and you split me open with a knife.

I’m battling monsters, half-monkey, half-tarantula, I’m pulling you out of the burning buildings and you say, I’ll give you anything.

But you never come through.

Give me bullet power. Give me power over angels. Even when you’re standing up

you look like you’re lying down, but will you let me kiss your neck, baby? Do I have to tie your arms down?

Do I have to stick my tongue in your mouth like the hand of a thief, like a burglary

like it’s just another petty theft? It makes me tired, Henry. Do you see what I mean?

Do you see what I’m getting at?

You swallowing matches and suddenly I’m yelling, Strike me. Strike anywhere.

I swear, I end up feeling empty, like you’ve taken something out of me, and I have to search my body for the scars, thinking

Did he find that one last tender place to sink his teeth in?.

I know you want me to say it, Henry,

it’s in the script, you want me to say, Lie down on the bed, you’re all I ever wanted and worth dying for too

but I think I’d rather keep the bullet this time. It’s mine, you can’t have it, see,

I’m not giving it up. This way you still owe me, and that’s as good as anything.

You can’t get out of this one, Henry, you can’t get it out of me, and with this bullet

lodged in my chest, covered with your name, I will turn myself into a gun, because it’s all I have,

because I’m hungry and hollow and just want something to call my own. I’ll be your

slaughterhouse, your killing floor, your morgue and final resting, walking around with this bullet inside me

‘cause I couldn’t make you love me and I’m tired of pulling your teeth. Don’t you see, it’s like

I’ve swallowed your house keys, and it feels so natural, like the bullet was already there,

like it’s been waiting inside me the whole time.

Do you want it? Do you want anything I have? Will you throw me to the ground

like you mean it, reach inside and wrestle it out with your bare hands?

If you love me, Henry, you don’t love me in a way I understand.

Do you know how it ends? Do you feel lucky? Do you want to go home now?

There’s a bottle of whiskey in the trunk of the Chevy and a dead man at our feet staring up at us like we’re something interesting.

This is where the evening splits in half, Henry, love or death. Grab an end, pull hard, and make a wish.

Richard Siken, Wishbone.

THE NEGATIVES:

-The diving. OMG, stop it, all of you.
-The whining. OMG, stop it, all of you.
-Dani Alves. The theatrics after Pepe's foul were embarrassing.
-Busquets. He's regressing to his 2009 form. Cut the crap, kid. Every time Busi falls to the ground clutching his face, a Barça fan dies of embarrassment.
-Pepe's red card. It wasn't a red, I think. More like a yellow.
-Pinto. Now, *this* was a well-deserved red. Someone get the man some Valium.
-Mou's presser. Refs are human and make mistakes. Last year those mistakes played in your favour, other times they play in Barça's favour. But when you start spouting off conspiracy theories, you lose all credibility.
-Mou's tactics. Playing at home, against a makeshit defence... and three DMs? No striker? Parking the bus to get a 0-0? Come on, there are tactis and tactics...
-Worried about La Roja. Pretty worried.
-I felt like a mother whose kid throws a tantrum: I swear he isn't like this at home!. To all neutral fans who watched this, I'm sorry.

THE POSITIVES:

-We won!
-Ibi Afellay was awesome! Kid was a great buy, needs to play more.
-Messi... just, Messi.
-Pep apparently got all the rage out of his system yesterday and kept quiet in the presser. Good.
-Puyol is back! As great as ever!
-With Puyol back, Piqué is back too.
-VV was amazing.
-Masche is pretty good too.

In any case... VISCA EL BARÇA!

Post a list of your top ten favourite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

I've been writing fic, on and off, for over 10 years now. From the Suest of Mary Sues to... um, hopefully moderately complex characters, from Star Trek and Harry Potter to the murky waters of RPS, I've come a long way. I think that 90% of my fics (wish-fulfilment stuff, mostly) are unposted anywhere, and will hopefully remain so, but of those published, my favourites are (in no particular order, and much too wordily explained)...

A trip down Memory Lane... )

And if Fate remember later, and come to claim her due, what sorrow will be greater than the joy I had with you? )

Then the rainstorm came over me
And I felt my spirit break;
I had lost all of my belief, you see
And realized my mistake,
But time threw a prayer to me
And all around me became still...

I need love, love's divine
Please forgive me now, I see that I've been blind,
Give me love, love is what I need to help me know my name...

Through the rainstorm came sanctuary
And I felt my spirit fly;
I had found all of my reality
I realize what it takes...

'Cause I need love, love's divine
Please forgive me now, I see that I've been blind,
Give me love, love is what I need to help me know my name...

Oh I, don't bend (don't bend), don't break (don't break)
Show me how to live and promise me you won't forsake
'Cause love can help me know my name...

Well I try to say there's nothing wrong
But inside I felt me lying all along
But the message here was plain to see:
Believe me...

Love can help me know my name.

Seal, Love's Divine.

(I just realised how great my little moodtheme icon goes with the video... *__*)

Every time someone comes up with a post about these over at the Barça comm, I feel compelled to make a couple more... and to share them here, too!
