Because I swore I couldn't do it, here's my attempt to choose just ten The Decemberists songs. My favourites. The ones that never fail to make me cry or, at least, leave my heart in my throat.

There are many, many more. In fact, it'd be easier to make a list of the songs I don't like from them (less than five? In the whole of their seven albums? Thereabouts). I didn't even get to include any of the songs from their last album... 'Rise to me' should've made the list, but I couldn't find it a place...

Anyway, here are My Ten Favourite The Decemberists Songs. All of them are worth the listen, and don't let the lyrics pass you by, they're the best part of most songs...

Red Right Ankle

Sample lyrics: This is the story of the boys who loved you, loved you now and loved you then. Some were sweet and some were cold and snubbed you, some just laid around in bed... some of them crumbled you straigh to your knees, did it cruelly, did it tenderly... some of them crawled their way into your heart to rend the ventricles apart...

O Valencia, from 'The Crane Wife'

Sample lyrics: And I swear to the stars, I'll burn this whole city down...

Sons & Daughters, from 'Picaresque'

Sample lyrics: Take up your arms, sons and daughters, we will arise from the bunkers, by land, by sea, by dirigible, we'll leave our tracks untraceable now...

We both go down together, from 'Picaresque'

Sample lyrics: ... I laid you down in the grass of a clearing, you wept, but your soul was willing.

The Engine Driver, from 'Picaresque'

Sample lyrics: I am a writer, writer of fictions, I am the heart that you call home, and I've written pages upon pages tryin to rid you from my bones...

On the bus mall, from 'Picaresque'

Sample lyrics: As four in the morning came on, cold and boring, we huddled close in the bus stop enclosure enfolding, our hands tightly holding... Here in our hovel we fuse like a family, but I will not mourn for you..

The Bagman's Gambit, from 'Picaresque'

Sample lyrics: And at the gate of the Embassy, our hands met through the bars as your whisper stilled my heart: 'No, they'll never catch me now...'

Record Year, from 'Always the bridesmaid'

Sample lyrics: What's the use of all of this? Is to remember you in the entire, 'cause I'm watching it slip away, and in the annals of the Empire, did it look this gray before the fall?

The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned), from 'The Hazards of Love'

Samples lyrics: O Margaret, the lapping waves are licking quietly at our ankles, another bow, another breath, this brilliant chill has come to shackle. With this long last rush of air, we'll speak our vows of starry whisper, and when the waves came crashing down, he closed his eyes and softly kissed her...

Summersong, from 'The Crane Wife'

Sample lyrics: My girl, linen and curls, lips parting like a flag all unfurled... she's grand, the bend of her hand digging deep into the sweep of the sand... Summer arrives, with a length of lights... Summer blows away, and quietly gets swallowed by a wave...

Oh, alright. Bonus song. Don't say I never did anything for you.

Rise To Me, from 'The King is Dead'

But boy, you are going to stand your ground, thet rise to me and you blow you down... let me see you stand your ground...

Hi dearest!

I haven't been here in ages, have I? To be honest, I haven't done any fun stuff in ages either. I haven't even written a word that isn't lab reports/blog posts in... in honest-to-God MONTHS. My life is so sad now... :(

But everything is going alright, I just need to manage my time better. I will find time to do the things I WANT to do, besides the things I NEED to do!

(and yes, that means your Goodreads review. I haven't forgotten. I'm considering writing it at the lab!)

:-)

You were missed, yes. :-)
And from the sound of it you can probably do with a bit of fun.

If you ever find the perfect way to manage your time, please let me know, because I still haven't found it myself. ;-)

(that's okay,I know it's going to be lovely when you post it.It's obviously the kind of book that (most likely) will disappear in utter silence, or is a very slow grower. Either way, not much I can do about it. It's time to concentrate on my next work)
